Summary: Cady has a memory of when her and Granddad talking about the ivory statues all of the island at each house. Ivory monkeys, elephants, and toads. Cady gets upset of how ivory is illegal, and how her granddad was a “privileged guy who didn’t care who got hurt, so long as his wife had cute statues she wanted to display in her summer houses.” Later in the reading, Cady hangs out with Mirren, Gat, and Johnny on the beach. There are more mentions of the Aunts fighting about the estate, and Mirren being sick. Later Gat, Mirren and Johnny decide to go kayaking, and then Cady tags along. They go to a island where there is a huge rock. Gat and Johnny climb up the rock jump into the rocking waters underneath them. Cady amazed decided to follow them up the rock, while everyone else is telling her not to. Cady does this because she wants to prove that she is brave, and strong when they think she’s weak. Mirren feeling sick again, cries because she thinks Cady is going to die or get hurt.

We Were Liars Literary Discussion:
• Today we talked about many themes throughout the book, questions we had, and experts. We also mentioned some character development about each of the Liars. For example, there are many metaphors used throughout the book especially when Cady is describing her father leaving her as him pulling out a gun and shooting her and having the bullet tear through her heart. This makes us think that Cady is a very deep person, and that she has many ideas in the world. Another example of character development is Gat. Gat is seen as being a know-it-all, and very logically. He cares a lot about how things work and also what is happening in the world. In my discussion I learned about theme of greed, alcoholism, and wealth, which I didn’t that much before, and how it relates to the other books we have read – The Pearl, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Some Goals for out next discussion would be to share our ideas on what Cady’s accident really was, and more questions and ideas we have about the book, because I feel by doing that you can see different things in the book in a whole new light that will raise more questions but will also inspire new ideas.
• List three big questions/ideas that you are thinking about while you are reading your book.

1) Why is Mirren always sick all of the time? Is that related to Cady’s accident? Is it not just Cady’s accident were all the liars involved?

2) Why is the title We WERE Liars instead of We ARE Liars?

3) What happened to Gat’s other girlfriend Raquel? Did/does he tell her he was with Cady?

I think my first question about Mirren being sick is important because I feel it will have to do with the ending, because otherwise why would the author mention Mirren being sick all the time and without explaining why. Mirren is sick during kayak trip, on the beach, and countless other times.
